Movies reviews:
The Thing from Another World (RKO 1951) Wow. What things can be said about The Thing from Another World? Well for starters, it is easy to see why John Carpenter remade this film. Sitting through this exercise in tedium, I wanted to it to be another movie too ("let's make this one, The Matrix"). However, there other things to comment on-other than being able to catch up on my sleep during the film. Things like: the Thing (meaning the alien and not some body part of mine, you nasty thing, you) seems to stalk his prey much like a cowboy sauntering out to a shootout. Oh wait this is probably because the Thing is played by none other than James Arness! (You know Miss Kitty's personal chew toy??) You may remember him from such television shows as Gunsmoke-I just remember him as Jimmy the Nose. There are some good things about this DVD. It comes in a great box that you can store other DVDs in, in case they grow up too quick and want to get their own place. They will still bring their laundry home on the weekends, I bet. The main menu layout has little interactivity to it and seems somewhat static. The same thing goes for the scene selection: yawn. The Thing only allows one to select English as the spoken language, while the subtitles can have their choice of English, French, and Spanish. Man, subtitles get all the good stuff! Speaking of good stuff, let's talk about that Original Trailer! Not the one your weird Aunt Thelma lives in the movie trailer (you never paid attention in class, did you?). To be honest, the trailer leaves much to be desired-such as a large blindfold. The film quality is grainy and sticks in my teeth. It's about as scary as watching reruns of Martha Stewart wait, I just got a chill. Good thing the film quality of the main feature isn't as grainy as the trailer. Luckily, the film is somewhat more interesting than the trailer somewhat being key here. The film quality is great and the sound quality is passable (you will still have to turn up the sound some). The DVD only offers full screen viewing, but do you really want to see fake snow in letterbox? In all, The Thing from Another World DVD is a nice, quiet addition to your personal catalog. While it doesn't offer much in the way of interactivity, special features, horror, or conversation, it does present itself as a good print of a horror classic that inspired some great burning scenes in its later remake. Like my friend's mother used to say: take two, they're small (she was seven feet tall). © 2003 Caddo Man Productions Michael A. Sheyahshe-Lell |
