House of Wax (André De Toth, 1953)

Believe it or not: Vincent Price will melt your heart in this classic horror film released on DVD. The DVD itself is chock full of goodness (god, I have always wanted to say that)-for this reason, I would recommend to anyone interested in film to add this DVD to their collection. Here's what you get:

The scene selection menu will set your fancy ablaze with elegant antique style and functionality. You will also find gorgeous still photos that capture the essence of each of the scenes and capture much cleavage period piece costuming. It's ok, the photos are small…so, you only have to feel a little guilty for staring. Wait, some of that cleavage is made of wax. Never mind, stare all you want!

This DVD allows one to choose which language Vincent Price should wax poetic in: English, French, or Spanish. But that's not all! You can have your choice of subtitles including: English, French, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, and even Portuguese. Will the fun never stop?

No!

Let's talk about the special features on this puppy! Wait, is this a pet store? Am I lost again? House of Wax has a black and white documentary about the premier of the film and all the stars that came to see it. The DVD even includes an original trailer for the film. The trailer is of good quality, with little to no graininess to it. The large and colorful titles of the trailer will assault your senses with their gaudy and original art (please don't press charges).

As for the feature itself, there is much to be said. The color is spectacular (and I say that without the aid of LSD). The print quality of the film is amazing; with pristine clarity you can see the wax boiling off the statues and count the lines in a young Charles Bronson's face. Didn't know he was in it? Now you do! Isn't learning fun?

No!

In addition, the audio of the DVD is great. You can even hear the main character's mind snapping. The DVD also carries with it some of the 3D elements of its original release (watch out for the paddle ball). This original "feeling" is preserved by the DVD's "Intermission." Check it out (but don't go too far…I'm feeling lonely).

Don't feel like you have gotten your money's worth yet? Boy, are YOU cheap! Fine. Here's one more wonderful element of the DVD: the disc includes another movie on the flip side! The House of Wax includes your very own copy of the Mystery of the House of Wax.

The film is originally black and white and has been colorized for your spewing pleasure. The sound quality of Mystery leaves much to be desired, so pump up the volume, Slater. While this gem from the 1930s isn't as polished as Vincent Price's vehicle, it does offer some great material for comparison and contrast. That is, if you're in to that sort of thing.

You should stop reading this right now and go out and buy a copy of House of Wax. Buy two, that way you can get one for me. Actually, can you spot me till Tuesday? I swear I will pay you back when my old lady gets home. Thanks, pal.
